The Joint Contingency Force Advanced Warfighting Experiment: Transforming The U. S. Army Light Forces For The Information Age

September 8, 2000, launched the start of the Joint Contingency Force (JCF) Advanced Warfighting Experiment (AWE) at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Fort Polk, Louisiana. The JCF AWE, which endeavors to enhance the lethality, survivability, and interoperability of light forces through advances in digitized situational awareness and command and control systems, represents one of the highest priorities in the transformation campaign of the U.S. Army. Joint Vision (JV) 2020 also recognizes the integration of information technologies to be a key enabler under its principles of dominant maneuver, precision engagement, focused logistics, and full dimensional protection. This thesis examines the current status of the U.S. light forces and the role of information technologies in digitizing light forces in accordance with the aims under JV 2020 and the Army Vision. The thesis also examines the JCF AWE, from its history, mission, and role in transforming the light forces for the information age to the core technological systems that comprise the focus of its experiments. Furthermore, the thesis will conclude by examining the lessons learned from the September 2000 JRTC exercise and draw broader conclusions about the effects of new technology on command and control and friction in future warfare
