There is increasing evidence to suggest that self-management education programs can complement medical care for patients with chronic conditions, particularly diabetes. Research indicates that self-efficacy is important to improve outcomes and perceived health status for patients with chronic disease including diabetes. This nine article review of research literature was designed to identify self-management programs that positively impacted the health outcomes and perceived health status of those individuals with diabetes in both rural and urban communities.
