A comparative study of the independent reading of first grade pupils in the homogeneous and heterogeneous grouping

The problem of this study is to discover whether there is any significant difference between the number of books read independently and the choice of books made by children in homogeneous grouping pattern and children in a heterogeneous grouping pattern at the first grade level. More specific objectives of this study are to study: 1. Which group of children does more independent reading? 2. Is there a difference in the type of interest of the children in the two groupings as judged by the topics of books which have been selected? 3. Does homogeneous grouping tend to bring out more mature interests in children with higher intelligence rating? 4. Does homogeneous grouping have a favorable or unfavorable effect on children with lower intelligence? Since wide reading and a love for reading are important aspects of reading instruction, various group organizational plans should be evaluated in the light of the stimulation they give to wide reading.
