The framework of the discussion about the role of grammar in dictionaries changescontinuously: new grammar theories open new models of analysis useful forlexicographers, the users’ knowledge of grammar and need for explicit grammaticalinformation in dictionaries vary, and new techniques make that information easilyavailable. In this article the role of grammar in bilingual productive Finnish-Swedishdictionaries is discussed against the background of a few central, complicated andcontrastively problematic issues in the Finnish grammar, in the area betweenmorphology, syntax and pragmatics, difficult to catch in a user-friendly way withinthe normal dictionary framework
