The petition in­dicates that many people at the University ·support the Spanish Speaking Institute and are committed to its implementation. I am very pleased that a director for the Institute has been named and I believe that every effort must be made to implement all aspects of the institute as soon as possible. Yours very truly, \\ ~w~~, Richard Wisniewski Professor of Education RW/bjs Enclosure A PETITION IN SUPPORT OF THE LATIN COMMUNITY Chancellor Klotseh~, We, the undersigned faculty, students and staff of UWM, support the demands of the Latin Community for a Spanish Speaking Outreach Institute. We believe that the de-mands are both reasonable and just. Among these demands are the immediate hiring of a director of the Institute, courses in bilingual and bicultural education, counseli ng and tutorial support, a G.E.D. program, and a comprehensive outreach program to the Latin community. The Latin community has presented its demands in an honorable and reasonable way, and we believe the University must respond far more rapidly than has thus far been the case. The needs of people must not be compromised by long delays that are too often a part of bureaucratic decision-making. Our Un iversity has an opportunity to respond to human needs--and it must re cognize the urgency of these needs. We strongly urge our administrative representatives to meet the demands of the Latin Community and to make the Institute a reality.
