Medieval church near Mazaire in Upper Svanetia

“The churches in the area were really chapels. From what I could see, they were little treasure houses, keeping sacred ancient religious items. Not even the priest could enter its portals without permission of the village elders. These were not only relics of the area—places far away that were being invaded would send their treasures to these remote areas where they were out of the reach of the invaders.
