Text on verso: Germania Neu Deutschlande ... with illustration.This is the third state of Sebastian Munster's map of Germaniae or Northern Europe from his 1598 Cosmographia. After 1588, this map was only re-published in the German editions of the Cosmographia of 1592, 1598, 1614, and 1628. One could call this map an upside-down map because it is oriented with south at the top. In the center are the towns of Bamberg and Schweinfurt in Franconia with Lake Geneva, Switzerland in the upper right. To the lower right is Holland and Belgium, to the upper left is Stiria, Austria and a portion of Hungary. Königsberg and Danzig are in the lower left. Illustrations are sprinkled throughout the map with boats and a sea monster adorning Oceanus Germanicus. There are two inset cartouches one with an alternate title and another showing scale.Grayscale;1:4,300,00
