Single-cell experiments reveal considerable fluctuations in the expression of both mRNA and protein. Among genetically identical cells, these fluctuations manifest as remarkably broad distributions of expression. What does the nature of stochastic expression intimate about the mechanisms underlying transcriptional regulation?
