The title of my dissertation is Becoming Azerbaijani: Uncertainty, Belonging and Getting By in a Post-Soviet Society . It is based on twenty-two months of fieldwork I conducted in Azerbaijan (2006-2008), both in the capital city, Baku, and in the country\u27s rural areas, following a research methodology that relied extensively on systematic participant observation (in Azerbaijani and Russian) in conjunction with formal in-depth interviews (in Azerbaijani, Russian and English).
