Antimicrobial resistance is a serious public health concern and threatens the effective prevention and treatment of a wide range of infections. The rapid emergence and spread of anti-malarial drug resistance has been a major challenge in malaria control efforts. Likewise, high rates of antibiotic resistance has been observed in common bacterial pathogens. Thus, understanding the complex mechanisms that underlie drug resistance is critical to prevent the further spread of resistance and to develop new drugs in order to diversify the tools available to treat microbial infections.
