Management of Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Persons with Dementia

Historically care providers have prescribed antipsychotic and other psychotropic medications in an attempt to manage the Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD). Currently, antipsychotic and other psychotropic medications are often still considered first-line therapy.1 Although there is little evidence to support their use, antipsychotic and other psychotropic medications are too often prescribed to persons with dementia. BPSD in dementia are diversified, therefore symptoms should be considered patient-centered as successful strategies may differ. The Alzheimer\u27s Association 2018 Dementia Care Practice Recommendations outline recommendations for quality patient-centered care practices based on a comprehensive review of current evidence, best practice and expert opinion.
