Luliang (China), busy street scene near center of town

Luliang, Yunnan Province, China - 1943 - 1945This bell tower was located in the center of town at the termination of four streets leading from the gateways of the walled town. This is not a very busy day in the market square. However, it does give us an idea of the activity that took place. Of interest in this picture is the girl coming toward us. She wears silver bracelets, silver ring and silver earrings. She has bound feet. The baskets are full of grain, which she might have purchased or possibly may sell. Evidently, it is quite early in the morning with the sun at a low angle on the buildings and tower. The gentleman to the right with the turban is interesting with his beard, mustache and side burns. He wears typical Chinese dress. It appears he's setting out cloth for sale. The basket will serve as a seat when he conducts business. The man in the very far right corner is evidently pretty well set up for business. The cap is knitted, much like caps we were in the U.S. The children to the right are having fun while the mother sets up her wares for sale. The gentleman to the far left wears a long tunic and western type hat. He walks with a Chinese soldier who is wearing an American Government issue overcoat.GrayscaleBox
