Luliang (China), temple tower visible above town wall

Yunnan Province, China 1943 - 1945Atop the wall surrounding the town of Luliang, sets a Taoist temple. The wall had four gateway entrances whose streets led to the center of the community. Most towns observed were walled. Evidently they provided protection against invaders and bandits. This particular earth wall was quite thick and faced with brick. The oxcarts at is base provide an idea as to the height of the wall. Note the gun ports atop the structure.GrayscaleBox
