Yunnan Province, China 1943 - 1945This elderly gentleman held his grandchild for all to see. He sits on the edge of the village well. What looks like a round stone is actually the opening to the local water supply. He holds a small broom used for keeping flies away. The child was dressed in colorful clothes. Note the grandfather's worn shoes. He is entrusted with the child's care since the parents are working in the fields. He projects an aura of pride and dignity.GrayscaleBox
