Chungking [Chongqing]'The National Government, which has officially adopted the solar, or Gregorian, calendar, tried for a time to discourage lunar New Year’s celebrations. But tradition dies hard in China, and the Government was eventually obliged to compromise with its own ruling. This it did by recognizing the lunar New Year’s as the “Spring Festival.” As such, it is still celebrated universally. The date varies from year to year, occurring sometime between the middle of January and the middle of February, according to the lunar calendar (p. 185).'Forman, H. (1948). Changing China.
