The Power Struggle Among Media Groups and its Effects on Journalism in Turkey

The reason why the field of journalism ismostly studied with an emphasis on its relationshipswith political and economic domains in Turkey is thatit is in a relationship of mutual dependence with thesedomains. Starting from 1980, when liberal economicpolicies began to be implemented, the relationshipbetween journalism and economics tended towards atrend of complicated development. The acquisition ofnewspapers operating as small-scale businessenterprises by business men from different sectors ofthe economy who made them part of groups and theresulting inclination toward horizontal, vertical andtransversal concentration as well as the relationshipsthat newspapers establish with agents of politicalpower in order to attain their economic goals putlimitations on the freedom and the quality of newsmakingprocesses. Within this framework, this studyaims to analyze the effects of the economicdevelopment in Turkey over time and the interests ofthe capitalist owners of big media organizations asmajor players in the economy on the field ofjournalism by using an argumentative method
