Urban Design and Fabric Reconversion in Italy and in The Netherlands

Following the end of the urban growth verifiedin the last 20 years the attention is focused on the cityand on the understanding of its different parts and oftheir systemic relationships. The deindustrializationwith the connected disposal of the urban structures, tiedup to the economic transformations of the period from1945 to 1985 has set in a central position of theurbanistic debate the presence of the urban voids andthe deindustrialised areas inside the cities.Nowadays there is the need to overcome partial logicsand to frame the transformation in an optics thatovercomes the planning for projects, as is occurred withthe interventions Bicocca in Milan or for the Lingotto inTurin, it is necessary to consider deindustrialised areasare spaces that are changing their status from"problem" to "resource" through strategies of reusethat allow the rationalization of the existinginfrastructures, the location of new productive activitiesand urban equipments able to oppose the urban declineand to produce quality.Very often the disused areas create urban spaces thatare perceived by the population as degraded anddangerous, or because of the lack of stability ofdilapidated structures still present, sometimes puttingat risk the safety of the inhabitants;These areas are often characterized by a wide numberof infrastrucutres that are connected in efficient way tothe urban context, but often we can’t see a sustainableuse of such resources of mobility that is old,monofunctional and dominated by the movement on thewheels.The considerable importance and dimension of thephenomenon and the implications for social, urban andeconomic re-use of disused involved sites, give to thisareas a strategic role for the redevelopment of the city
