Representação, previsão e música

Mental representations are a central issue in the field of Cognitive Psychology. The present study addressed three questions about this issue, specifically related to music cognition: i) What is the origin of representations?; ii) How do they relate to external reality; and iii) What are they for? In this way, the relationships between representations and the body-mind system, representations and reality, and representations and their psychological functions will be analyzed. It is argued that the ‘what for’, or the psychological function, is the key aspect of mental representations, and also of musical representations. More precisely, it is proposed that, regardless of how they are formed, representations are oriented towards the future, and that their predictive power is the very cause of their psychological existence. One clear example of this would be the representations that listeners use to anticipate the course of music, which, when violated, would promote the affective content of musical experience.Las representaciones mentales ocupan un lugar clave en el ámbito de la Psicología Cognitiva. En este artículo se intenta avanzar sobre tres preguntas acerca del tema, con relación específicamente a la cognición musical: i) ¿cuál es el origen de las representaciones?; ii) ¿cómo se relacionan con la realidad externa?; y iii) ¿para qué sirven? De este modo se abordará el análisis de las relaciones existentes entre las representaciones y el complejo mentecuerpo, las representaciones y la realidad, y las representaciones y su función psicológica, respectivamente. Se argumenta que el ‘para qué sirven’, o su ‘función psicológica’, es el componente más significativo de las representaciones mentales, y también de las representaciones mentales específicamente musicales. Más precisamente, se propone que, más allá de su constitución, las representaciones están orientadas al futuro, y que su poder predictivo es la razón misma de su existencia psicológica. Un claro ejemplo de ello lo constituirían las representaciones que el oyente utiliza para predecir la música, las cuales, al ser frustradas, promoverían el contenido afectivo de la experiencia musical
