THE THEMES OF THE U.S. AND INDONESIAN NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE NEWS IN THE SOURCE LANGUAGE AND TARGET LANGUAGE

The study is aimed at finding out the theme structure of M.A.K. Halliday‟s functional grammar in U.S and Indonesian version of National Geographic magazine‟s news articles, especially to discover the similarities and differences by the use of functional grammar the theme structure in both versions. Theme is the first element occurring in a clause containing given information. Theme can be identified in some different types which are Topical (nominal group, nominal group complex, adverbial groups, prepositional phrases and embedded clause); Interpersonal (adjunct, vocative, finite, wh-element); and Textual (Continuative, structural, conjunctive). The finding shows that there are a quite much different total number of themes between the U.S. version (586 themes) and the Indonesian one (479 themes). However, the percentages of theme in both versions are mostly similar. It might happen because the translator tried to keep the consistency to the form of the source language even when the fact that the grammatical structure of each language are very different. Overall, a translator might omit some improper sentences that do not fit target language‟s culture but should be more creative in transferring the meaning so that the readers would get the more acceptable translations but still catch the same meaning
