Teachers’ And Students’ View On Nineth Grade English Curriculum

Aim of this study is to analyze 9th class English Foreign Language teaching curriculum according to views of teachers and student. This is a qualitative case study. The study was conducted in two schools, one of which was state and the other was private, in Ankara Çankaya at the level of 9th grade. Five teachers and 10 students from each school and 30 subjects in total were chosen randomly as the universe of the study. Data was gathered through semi-structured focused interviews implemented by the researcher. The data were analyzed through content analysis method. The results obtained indicate that state school teachers and students generally have negative views about subject also phrased that the themes of the course books were not interesting enough to attract attention. Significant amount of the subjects uttered that four skills were not effectively processed in the curriculum. Both groups have positive views about functions and useful language to be improved. About materials that are advised to be used in the classes in the curriculum, both groups have positive views, especially about the smart board. Besides, it was found that no extra methods and technics assisting the curriculum was used in state schools other than the recommendations prescribed in the handbook of curriculum. The view of teaching and learning environment is that both teachers and students are active during the lesson but it depends on the class. According to teachers’ and students’ views, evaluation techniques should be improved by adding more practice exams in the curriculum.Bu araştırmanın amacı, dokuzuncu sınıf İngilizce dersi öğretim programına ilişkin öğretmen ve öğrenci görüşlerinin incelenmesidir. Bu çalışmada nitel araştırma desenlerinden biri olan durum çalışması kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın uygulama aşaması Ankara’nın Çankaya ilçesinden seçilen devlet okulu ve özel okul 9. sınıf seviyesinde iki okulda gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın katılımcıları, her bir okulda, 5 öğretmen ve 10 öğrenciden ayrı gruplarla olacak şekilde özel okuldan 15 katılımcı ve devlet okulundan yine 15 olmak üzere iki odak gruptan ve toplam 30 katılımcıdan oluşmuştur. Araştırmanın verileri, katılımcılara uygulanan ve araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan yarı yapılandırılmış odak grup görüşme formu ile elde edilmiştir. Ortaöğretim İngilizce dersi 9. sınıf İngilizce öğretim programının içerik analizi ile incelenmesi yapılmıştır. Devlet okulu ve özel okul İngilizce öğretmen ve öğrencilerinin 9. sınıf İngilizce öğretim programının temalarına ilişkin görüşlerinden ulaşılan bulgulara göre temaların öğrencilerin ilgisini çekecek düzeyde olmadığı belirlenmiştir. Programın işlevler ve dil kullanımına ilişkin öğretmen ve öğrenci görüşlerine göre ulaşılan bir diğer bulgu ise bu konuda programın geliştirilmesi gerekliliğidir. Dört becerinin hem öğretmen hem de öğrenci bazında istenilen düzeyde kazandırılamadığı ulaşılan bulgular sonucunda ortaya konmuştur. Materyaller konusunda öğretmen ve öğrencilerden çıkartılan görüşlere göre özellikle akıllı tahtanın dil öğretimi üzerine olumlu yansıması olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Devlet okullarında programda önerilen materyaller haricinde diğer yöntem ve metotların kullanılamadığı sonucuna da ulaşılmıştır. Öğretme-öğrenme ortamına ilişkin görüşlerden ulaşılan bulgulara göre de derslerde hem öğretmenin hem de öğrencilerin etkin olduğu sonucu elde edilmiştir. Değerlendirme tekniklerine ilişkin öğretmen ve öğrenci görüşlerinden çıkartılan bulgular daha çok uygulama sınavlarının programa dâhil edilmesi gerektiğini göstermiştir
