This action research based project examines the practices and relationships established by a teacher of primarily African American students placed in a program within their school focused on literacy. The research focuses on the teacher\u27s ability to enact Culturally Relevant Teaching and examines the impact it had on students. The three themes that emerge from the study are Identity, which looks at the value of establishing a cultural identity affirmed through curriculum; Literacy, examines the definition of literacy produced as a result of learning new information; and Achievement, examines practices used by the teacher to promote success while developing a cultural identity and becoming literate.
