Abstract

Jesús Liste Forján (1907-1994) was born into a poor Galician family, of quarry and peasant tradition that seemed destined for emigration. Therefore, its social origins do not seem to be the most adequate to become, already like Enrique Líster, one of the best known military leaders of the Popular Army of the Republic. His early contacts with forms of intra-community violence in Galicia, his emigration to Cuba, where his political socialization took place, his militancy in the Communist Party of Spain —celebrated in the Soviet Union in the 30s of the 20th century— and the outbreak of Civil War are some of the factors that serve to explain a military career that was beyond the defeat of the Second Spanish Republic.
