The mathematical activity in school takes place in interpretive complex environments which they are conditioned by the understanding of its protagonists. To clarify the processes involved in such environments, in this work we explore different principal issues related to the interpretation of the understanding in mathematics. In this path, we find the reasons to suggest an integrative proposal to access from an operative way to the mathematical understanding of the students. We support this proposal by setting the theoretical and methodological bases of what we call the hermeneutic circle of understanding in mathematics.
