This paper has stemmed from a post-doctoral research carried out in two universities, one in Brazil and the other in Portugal, which offer teacher education courses. The aim was to analyze the presence of Paulo Freire’s thought in teacher education courses. In order to do that, we used an open questionnaire as a data collection tool, which was answered by the total number of students selected to participate in the research. We have provisionally concluded that the plurality of understandings expressed in the students’ answers shows, on the one hand, the fragility of the discussion about the author’s work, but, on the other hand, the numerous possibilities that Paulo Freire’s writings provide.
