The competency-based approach requires a great number of conditions for its implementation in university education, conceiving the human being from the integrality and complexity of its dimensions, in permanent interaction with the context. In this regard, the objective of this article is to explain the evolution of the competency-based approach at a higher education level in latin america; for which two instruments were used, one type matrix for the content analysis of the official documents and another type questionnaire addressed to the curricular representatives; the same categories of analysis were used in its construction.
