This is a study of the Chinese students' efforts to gain the right and chance to stay on in Australia after the June 4 massacre event occurred in Beijing in 1989, when there were about 20,000 of them living in Australia. The specific focus of this study is the experiences of the students over a period of twelve months from 4 June 1989 to 27 June 1990, when the students were virtually allowed to stay permanently. This was a special onshore migration intake. Such an intake once had a significant impact upon Australian humanitarian and refugee immigration policies in the late 1980s and the early 1990s.
