Gravitational waves, the faint ripples in spacetime predicted by Einstein’s theory of general relativity, were first measured by the LIGO detectors on September 14, 2015. Since then, more gravitational waves have been measured by both LIGO and Virgo. These detections have opened up a new way to explore the universe and have resulted in new astronomical discoveries
