This research develops a mathematical model based on the First Law of Thermodynamics aimed at estimating the energy consumption associated with refrigerated cargo truck transportation. Specifically, the model considers design parameters and operational conditions including travel time, average vehicle speed, average incident solar radiation, dimension and properties and insulation, along with the absorptivity and emissivity of paint used on external surfaces. This model is useful in identifying how the design features of the refrigerated body may be optimized in material type and dimension so as to minimize energy demand, leading to future, more environmentally–friendly designs
