This paper compares the impressionist artist, Camille Pissarro\u27s late paintings in Paris to the fashionable figure of the flaneur, a persona who observes people, fashion, and activity on the streets of Paris. Pissarro represents a modern flaneur, by painting the streets and views of Paris, from a height. In seven series of Paris, is able to portray the city at its fullness. This paper examines two series in Paris, one of the Bouelvard Montmartre and the other of the Tuleries gardens. Each represents a portion of the city; Pissarro paints the changing activity, and conditions on the elongated boulevards and he paints the serene escape from hectic city life in the Tuileries gardens.
