It\u27s Not that Easy Being Green: Sustainable Development Campaigns Derived from a Community Based Initiative

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of community based initiatives in the formation of sustainable development campaigns. Sustainable development campaigns derived from a community based initiative allow the community to construct a campaign directly related to the needs and issues of the specific community. A sustainable development campaign based on a common vision created by community residents and participants will develop into an effective campaign representative of local issues and concerns. The methodology used to determine the effectiveness of community based initiatives will be found in a series of case studies. The communities chosen for this application are Union County, Pennsylvania; the Los Angeles EcoVillage; and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Each of these communities has a recognized sustainability campaign that was founded from a community based initiatives and is focused on factors important to each community. A final analysis will be completed for Wooster, Ohio to determine if a progrowth community without a previous history of community based initiatives is a viable candidate for sustainability. Determined from this application will be the importance of a campaign founded on a community based initiative and broad based citizen commitment
