Caveolin-1 (CAV1) is the major protein that comprises caveolae, also known as cave-like invaginations, that are found in both the cytoplasm and on the plasma membrane of human cells. It was once thought that CAV1 was involved solely in endocytosis; however, recent research suggests that CAV1 has multiple functions in the cell. Specifically, CAV1 is important for cell-signaling, in which it up- and down-regulates multiple cell processes; including, cell proliferation and invasion.
