Teaching Character Education Through Service-Learning

My tenth grade science class was starting a unit on the Ever Changing Earth. To get things going, I opened with a discussion about earthquakes and asked the class, What would you do if an earthquake hit right now? Students provided the expected answers ranging from hide under a desk, to stand in the doorway, to run outside. However, one student replied, I would head to the mall. The mall? , I asked.
