The paper explores the question of how Hispanic/Latino identity develops among first-time immigrants to the U.S. living in the Philadelphia area. This exploration was done through an extensive review of the current literature and by carrying out in-depth interviews with six individuals who were at least eighteen years old and diverse in terms of gender and countries of origin. Two important areas explored through the research were the characteristics of Hispanic/Latino identity and how the participants’ identity journeys compare to prevalent theories of ethnic identity development.
