An Evaluation of NGO-Government Relationships in Bangladesh

A network is a common place for the participating parties (organizations, individuals or a combination of organizations and individuals) with a mission for achieving a common objective in a particular sector without losing identity or autonomy. This research has been conducted in order to assess the networks within the NGO sector in Bangladesh. The research also assesses the types of activities that are performed by the networks on members’ capacity building and the activities on improving NGO-government relationships. During my study, I tried to assess the effectiveness of networking organizations. For data collection, I conducted individual interviews with NGO directors and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with national and local NGO directors, coordinators, and member secretaries. Some respondents reported that networks had successfully established a good relationship with the government. Others reported little or no relationship with the government or harmful relationships with the government. The problem is about the attitude of top bureaucrats within the government that has not changed to accept NGOs as change agents in development. Their views on various aspects of NGO-government relationships are structured and analyzed in my paper. Based on these analyses, this study that the governments and NGOs might improve many areas of life in a community if they worked together more effectively
