Add to ORKGDaguerreotype of young girl, ca. 1861-1865. The girl’s father, William S. Glanville, was a Confederate soldier who was a POW at Vicksburg, Miss., during the Civil War. A handwritten note with the image describes how Glanville kept the image in his pocket all the time he was a POW. William S. Glanville survived the War. Daguerreotypes were invented in France and were popular by 1839. The image was produced by exposing a polished copper plate with a mirror-like surface, and was kept under glass.
