InterViewR: A Mixed-Reality based Interview Training Simulation for Individuals with Autism

Job interviews are high-stress social encounters that are uniquely challenging for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Training simulations are increasingly used for interview preparation but are limited by environment immersivity and affective state responsiveness. We present InterViewR, a mixed-reality environment merging digital interview training in immersive virtual reality with wearable smart technology to provide intelligent affective bio-feedback. We conducted an evaluation of InterViewR with three user groups: individuals with ASD, neurotypical individuals, and career counselors (n=10) to gather feedback pertaining to feasibility, usability, and effectiveness. InterViewR was successful at providing real-time and reflective feedback based on the user’s affective states, which were considered effective. Participants were enthusiastic about the potential of InterViewR in aiding interview training. Interestingly, two users were so enamored by the novelty of InterViewR that they failed to notice the real-time feedback. We provide future directions, which can advance understanding pertaining to the design of intelligent affective technology
