Sarah Michael Singleton was born in in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was raised in Hammond, Indiana, where she graduated from Hammond High School in 1967. She then enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, where she received her B.A. in June of 1971. Singleton then returned to Indiana to study law at Indiana University. While in law school, Singleton was on the editorial board of the Indiana Law Journal, served as an Associated Instructor in Civil Procedure and in The Dynamics of American Law, and served for two years as a Staff Assistant at the University’s Student Legal Services department.
