Perceptions of Eating Disorders Among College Students

Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses that affects an individual both physically and psychologically. Eating disorders are caused by a complex combination of factors including genetics, biochemical, psychological, cultural and environmental. It is critical that an individual who is suffering from an eating disorder receive proper care so that they have a chance of full recovery. Although eating disorders are potentially life threatening, they are often ignored due to the sensitivity of the issue or a lack of knowledge about the severity of the disorder. As a result, there are several misconceptions towards eating disorders and why people develop them. According to the National Eating Disorder Association, the age group most susceptible to developing an eating disorder are 15-24 years of age. The foundation of my thesis is to identify misconceptions that are most prevalent on Eastern Kentucky University’s campus. Survey methods will be used to determine respondent beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge towards eating disorders.
