College attendance rates for women are continuing to rise, especially for the single-mother population. This current study examines the contributing factors of why single mothers need and/or desire a postsecondary education, and how they attain it. Using the diary method, Keeping Up with the College Mom follows three single mothers through four weeks of the semester, to determine the available resources and the obstacles involved in completing a college degree. Consistent with previous findings, the results from this study show lack of childcare and the expense of childcare to be the main deterrent for parents who wish to complete college.
