Hip-hop music has frequently been used as a way to express political ideas and ideologies. While scholars have analyzed these political ideas extensively, little attention has been given to how these ideas actually influence and affect listeners. The existing research on this topic is outdated and incomplete. The purpose of this study is to provide an updated and complete assessment of hip-hop’s effects on the political attitudes and behaviors of listeners. In this paper, I perform a statistical analysis of the 2005 Black Youth Project Youth Culture Survey to identify these effects.
