The instability of the North Korean economy and regime has led to significant increases in migration out of the country in past years. The famine of the 90s led to an increase in the internal movement of the population, as well as mass movement across the Chinese border. While the migration from North Korea to South Korea has been minimal, the number of North Koreans entering the south has been steadily increasing since the early 2000s.
