Where They Were

Where They Were Each photograph displayed is a fragmented story of people, a place, and a moment. The subjects captured are native to each environment, caught in an everyday moment. The details of their surroundings help to define these characters and inform the viewer. The photographs are sketches rather than definitions. They are sketches of a greater story, enabling the viewer to imagine their own narrative. The people and places photographed are not meant to represent extremes of any genre, but rather the vastness of America’s landscape and population. Therefore, each subject was accepted as they were and where they were. These photographs were taken over a series of road trips, some as short as Annandale to Albany, and others as long as New York City to Orlando. Without a predetermined route or destination, I passed through unfamiliar places occupied by strangers. The experience of approaching these strangers became an entire process within itself and is a skill I am still developing. My journey became just as much about these interactions, as the actual work I produced
