The Efficacy of Art Therapy in the Treatment of Psychotic Disorders

Art therapy has been shown to be an effective form of treatment for a variety of populations and disorders. This thesis examines its efficacy in the treatment of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, as both disorders include elements of psychosis—symptoms which art therapy may be particularly able to address. Existing literature is reviewed, including case studies, studies with clinical populations, and trials of art therapy in clinical settings. Interviews with a few practicing therapists who have experience using art in a therapeutic setting are also included. The review of these sources has demonstrated the merits, successes, and limitations of art therapy
