This PhD in music composition explores a compositional approach referred to as \u27Transfunctionality\u27, where traditional acoustic instruments were paired with \u27Expanded Instrument Systems\u27 (EIS). These technological peripherals allow performers access to sonic expression in a live setting that would be inaccessible by other means. I\u27ve sought to classify such performance technologies not as \u27add-ons\u27 or \u27performance elements\u27, but as integral parts of that which is considered to be the \u27instrument\u27. This aesthetic consideration has led me to work closely with musicians to create EIS that offer musically meaningful live interactions.
