The aim of this article is to explain as clearly as possible how civic territory was organised in Gauls ; and what names can be given to human groups inside cities (ciuitates). The case of Vendœuvres-en-Brenne (Bituriges Cubi) will be the starting point from which we shall try to reflect on the use of the word vicus (it is never mentioned in the Gaulish ou Germanic docu¬ mentation which only says vicani) ; on its nature ; on its inordinate generalization in modern texts ; on its relation to the expression “agglomération secondaire ”.
