Excavations have been carried out at Aphrodisias in Caria for over 50 years and have revealed an important Roman city. Yet, archaeological data on the pre-Roman period are very fragmentary. In contrast, some seated terracotta female figures demonstrate the use of the sanctuary of Aphrodite during the archaic period.
