Over 450 specimens from public and private collections have been examined. Nineteen valid species are present in West Africa, one of which, Palpares reticulatus, had never been mentioned. Their geographical distribution are presented, with nine species being apparently endemic for the region. The male Stenares arenosus is described. The lectotypus of three taxa are designated : Palpares radiatus, P. spectrum, P. tessellatus. New synonyms are proposed as follows : Palpares latipennis Rambur = nigrita Navàs = languidus Navàs = carli Navàs ; P. nigrescens Navàs = aquinatis Navàs ; P. obsoletus Gerstaecker = delafossei Navàs ; P. tessellatus Rambur = Myrmeleon percheronii Guérin-Méneville.
