Many writers have suggested that post-war Britain was semidetached from Europe and thereby missed the opportunity to become involved and to take the lead in schemes for European unity at a time when it was much more powerful than the other continental powers. Such an analysis under-estimates the extent to which British policy was engaged with Europe. British policy had been dominated by a failure to recognise the country’s weakness. Such recognition by the EEC powers, says Tony Judt, led them to found the EEC.
