The imaginary and the decision-making process : the example of de Gaulle’s two vetos against Britain joining the Common Market. General de Gaulle’s opposition to Britain joining the Common Market was welcomed favourably by the majority of the French. The Gaullist decision was therefore not contrary to majority representations. In 1963, during the first “No”, Britain was perceived as a conservative country, turned towards the open sea. From 1965, the English cultural revolution clouded this traditional image and seduced the young, but the other generations saw in this phenomenon the symptom of an identity crisis, the dominant image remaining that of a country in decline.
