In Earth and Reveries of Repose, Gaston Bachelard meditates on the reveries of the intimacy of matter, on “the oniric forms of curiosity straining towards the inside of things.” Drawing on this philosophical and literary investigation, the article sets out to explore images of depth in the poetry of Medbh McGuckian. After establishing the relation between the notions of landscape and inscape, it proceeds to show how the poet adopts both an inward perspective based on inner perceptions, and an oniric perspective granting a possible access to the mystery locked in the detail of things.
